Uniqlo jersey barrel pants review and how to style them - nine.com.au
As far as pant shape trends go, the barrel leg isn't one that presents as super-wearable. The style is usually fitted at the waist, then curves out on the legs, and tapers towards the hem.
While barrel leg pants may not be for everyone, I find the shape to be fun, stylish and the easiest way to add a point of interest to my outfits, particularly as someone who spends most of her time in pants or separates.
In recent months, I've acquired a few pairs of barrel leg jeans and pants, with the newest addition being Uniqlo's Jersey Barrel Leg Pants, which were recently released in Australia after reaching viral status on TikTok. The pants are a women's style but have become so popular they've found many male fans.
The pants come in three colourways: off-white, olive and navy. I chose navy because I already have a few pairs of pants in off-white or ecru shades, and I don't think olive has as much versatility in my wardrobe.
I like that the navy pants can feel as formal as wearing black pants, but work just as well in casual settings. I actually think they've unlocked a hard-to-achieve outfit vibe in the way they relax more office-appropriate looks (think a button-up and loafers) and dress up weekend attire (T-shirt, cap and thongs).
The fabric helps – it's a mix of cotton, polyester and elastane, which feels really comfortable, a little slinky, but also helps hold its curved shape.
I'm 163cm tall and got size S, which is the perfect full length for me; they sit about 1cm off the ground when I wear shoes. I tried size M, which created a more curved silhouette, but I would have needed to get them hemmed.
The reason I think these pants are a good pair for anyone wary of the barrel leg is that the shape is just balloony enough without being exaggerated, and at $59.90, the price is also right.
In terms of outfit versatility, I can't stop reaching for these pants each morning – I've worn them to work, on weekends and even to Disneyland.
You can't beat the simplicity of a slouchy black tee and the pants. To add more interest, I layered necklaces and wore silver ballet flats. I almost always wear a belt with jeans or pants.
From certain angles, the pants can look like wide-leg tailored pants. On a warm autumn day, I added a touch of femininity with a green ruffled top I had made in Vietnam, and finished the look with black fisherman sandals I've had for years.
I love the way the pants drape and pool over shoes. The coverage means my leopard print sneakers don't quite steal the show, but still get their moment to shine.
The pants were perfect to wear on a sunny-but-slightly-windy day spent gallery-hopping, worn with a classic striped top (also from Uniqlo!) and a car coat. I added pops of colour with my cap and sneakers.
The writer was gifted a pair of Uniqlo Jersey Barrel Pants for the purpose of this review.
